The department prepares students to advance in their professional, educational, and research careers by teaching nursing theory, nursing research and biostatistics. The faculty members in the department are being actively involved in quality assurance, research projects and grant proposal writing within the School and the University. There are two progammes offered in the department, namely: MSc Advanced Nursing Practice with 13 areas of specialization and Doctoral Degree in Nursing. The MSc Advanced Nursing Practice programme closely followed the MScN programme developed three universities in East Africa under Improving Nursing Education and Practice in East Africa (INEPEA) Project which was EU-sponsored.
The PhD program builds on the foundational knowledge and expertise acquired in BSc Nursing education and on the advanced substantive and expert knowledge gained in MSc Advanced Nursing Practice to develop nurse scientists The program provides the student with a broad perspective on philosophy of science and its application to solving challenging health problems facing our nation, particularly those related to care systems, experience with common and emerging research design and methods, rigorous training in statistics and mentored research and teaching experiences to reinforce knowledge acquisition and skill development.
