Message from the Dean

The School of Nursing and Midwifery was established as a Department of Nursing Sciences in the school of Health Sciences in 2008.The department became the School of Nursing and Midwifery in 2011 and was later rebranded in 2016 as School of Nursing, Midwifery and Paramedical Sciences (SONMAPS).

The School’s aspirations and actions are be guided by core values drawn from the discipline of Nursing, Midwifery and Paramedical Sciences, The University community, and global society. Our global perspective is for the advancement of nursing/midwifery and other health-related professional programmes for all through interdisciplinary intercultural learning under diverse interdisciplinary environment. Our main outcome is to meet the dynamic workforce and health care needs of the national and global societies for the 21st Century and beyond, contributing ultimately to new paradigms for nursing, midwifery and paramedical education and the delivery of health care.

The School is committed to building an academic environment that fosters intellectual freedom, scholarly teaching, distinction in research and scholarship, pluralism, clinical and community practice and service, compassion, and humanity’s collective responsibility for sustainable physical, social, and cultural environment. This opportunity is made possible through identified needs of educating health care professionals who can meet the demands of the new health care delivery systems and address the shortage of health care workforce nationally and globally.

The School has experienced academic staff in nursing/midwifery, community health, public health, paramedical science, education and research. Among international institution that the School collaborates with are: Oulu University (Finland), Rutgers University (USA), Charles Darwin University (Australia) and Langara College (Canada).
